Topic 2600 – parental responsibility

Introduction:

A.     Psa. 127:1-5 – children are a heritage of the Lord. They are a reward.

1.      To be counted as blessings…not as a burden.

2.      It is w/utmost importance that we bring them up in a way that is pleasing to God.

3.      127:4 – arrows compared to children:

a)      Arrows had to be carefully formed & shaped correctly to fly straight.

b)      Children must be molded & shaped right if they are to grow up and mature in God’s way.

c)      Parenthood is more about begetting children & providing for their physical needs.

B.      Parents have a great influence on children. Statistics:

1.      1.5 % of a child’s time is spent at church.

2.      25% of a child’s time is spent at school.

3.      73% of a child’s time is spent under the influence of the home.

4.      Statistics tell us that the parent is the prime influence in the life of their children.

C.     Children need parents who are crazy about them, parents who get involved in their lives on a daily basis.

D.    Parents are active participants’ w/God in creating & maturing human beings.

 

I. God’s word gives us very many practical aspects to parenting.

A.     Deut. 6:5-7 – parents should love God w/every fiber of their being, model that love for their children, & teach their children the commandments of God.

1.      Parents…how spiritual are you?

a)      Regularly ask: are my instructions in righteousness in danger of ringing hollow?

b)      Do I project a do as I say, not as I do message?

2.      Our children must learn that God’s commandments mean something REAL in our lives!

3.      They need to learn when they hear it & when they observe it – for the 2 reinforce the other.

B.      Pro. 22:6 – Solomon tells us 2 things here:

1.      How we train a child today will affect the kind of adult he/she grows into.

a)      Training begins NOW – no matter the age.

2.      There is a way for a child to go.

a)      A path the child should go, and a path he should not go.

C.     Eph. 6:4 – tells us how we can train them in the way they should go…

1.      It is the job of the parents to train them.

2.      Parents teaching must be consistent.

 

II. The goal of parenting – as seen in Eph. 6:4.

A.     6:4 – written in an active voice.  Parents…YOU bring them up.

1.      Parents are responsible for the raising of the child…

a)      Not bible class teachers; not grandparents; not schools; not community.

b)      You…parents…bring up your children.

2.      Children become in life what their parents make them.

a)      Like clay in potter’s hands.

b)      Instruct them to turn away from sin.

c)      Instruct them to be excited about their duty toward God.

B.      6:4 – written in present tense. Suggests continuous action.

1.      Involves action from birth to empty nest.  Not part time.

C.     6:4 – written as an imperative.

1.      Not optional.

2.      Parents will be held responsible for the brining up/training of their children.

a)      Parental responsibility is all about example and instruction.

b)      Parents will children at home need to be especially aware of this.

3.      1 Sam. 3:12-13 – Eli’s sons were described as worthless and not knowing God.

a)      Eli’s sin?  Lack of training/discipline/instruction.

b)      He would answer for his neglect.

4.      When children grow up – they will be held responsible for their own decisions/actions.

 

III. How to bring them up in the instruction of the Lord.

A.     Must use the tools given to us to raise our children.  How?

B.      Bible instruction.

1.      Deut. 6:4-9 – bible is the best guide for parents/children in ALL situations.

a)      School, work, overall attitude, courtship, any crisis’ that come up.\

b)      Involves immersion in God’s word.

C.     By personal example of parents.

1.      Phil. 4:9 – apply this verse to the parent/child relationship.

2.      Parents…

a)      Have they HEARD you complain about the elders/preacher/problems at church?  What kind of message are you sending?

b)      Have they SEEN in you some questionable behavior?

c)      Have they RECEVIED a consistent portrayal of the life you lead?

D.    Take advantage of bible class.

1.      Teachers; thanks for your great efforts here. You play a significant influence in the lives of our children.  Thanks!

a)      Hold these people up in honor!

2.      We must guard against take the valuable resources we have for granted.

a)      Our attitude toward bible classes can be a good indicator of the amount of our desire to know God.

b)      What does it say about our desire when we come into class late?  Attend sporadically?

3.      What does it say when we do not hold our children accountable to be prepared for Bible Class?

a)      Do we approach bible class lessons w/the same emphasis as we do on school work?

b)      What if our kids treated their school work like they do their bible class assignments?

4.      What does it say when we do not back up the teacher’s expectations for class participation?

a)      Extra work; memorization; crafts.  Our job is NOT to undermine the authority and influence of the teacher!

b)      We should back that teacher up; hold them up; thank them for investing their time into our children!

5.      Kids…listen up! How important is bible class to you?

a)      Do you regularly DO your lesson?  Participate in class?

b)      Challenge to excel in this area!

c)      Thank your teachers for what they do for you!

 

Conclusion:

A.     We need the type of parenting that closely reflects the character of God.

1.      Need parents who lead through patience, example, with wisdom.

2.      Parents who are attuned to spiritual things.

3.      Parents who will patiently instruct their children.

B.      Js. 1:2-5 – esp. 4-5 – consider these verses in context of parent/child relationship.

C.     Involves vision for the end result, when the child grows up having his priorities in the right place.

D.    Psa. 78:1-4

E.      Spiritual priorities in check? Get them right!
