Framing Values into Our Kids

Introduction:

Is there any truth to Proverbs 22:6? Sometimes we look at younger generations & wonder if godly values have to the wayside. We need to be reminded that godly values are relevant for everyday & age. We don’t need a new set of moral standards & guidelines – we just need a return to what God said all along. Instilling these values into children is the responsibility of the parents. (Eph. 6:4; Col. 3:20-21) Parents help w/the most important part of the structure – the framework for life. Parents will be held responsible for the way they build! (Eli – 1 Sam. 3:12-13) Let’s go over 4 suggestions that will help your children build a strong moral foundation for life.

I. Remember…now is the time to start.

A. Children begin learning at the moment they are born.

B. From their youngest years – children respond mentally to things they see/hear. See Deut. 6:5-7

C. Psa. 127:1-5 – Children are a heritage from God. A reward.

1. Children must be molded & shaped if they are to fly right!

II. Teach them godly morals & values.

A. Children need to learn the need for respect.

1. Eph. 6:1-3; Col. 3:20 – parents & grandparents.

2. Rom. 13:1-7 – government; 2 Pet. 2:13-20 – all people.

B. Children need to learn about humility. Phil. 2:4-9

C. Children need to learn to be thankful for what they have.

1. This is expected! Col. 3:15; Psa. 50:14a; 1 Thess. 5:18; Eph. 5:20

D. Teach them about character & integrity.

1. 1 Tim. 1:5 – this is the goal of Christianity!

2. To be above reproach; blameless; w/o a hint of dishonor.

E. Teach them to begin the day w/recognition of God. Psa. 118:24

III. Children need to learn responsibility.

A. It is man’s responsibility to work for him, provide for himself. Gen. 3:19

B. Our children must know they are responsible for their actions before God. Ezek 18:20, 30

1. 1 Cor. 3:8; Rev. 2:23b; Gal. 6:5

C. Challenge your children w/tasks that help them learn responsibility.

1. Expect the best. Expect them to succeed. Help them succeed by equipping them with the tools to succeed.

2. Help them pursue excellence – never do anything half heartedly.

3. Eph. 6:6-8; esp. Col. 3:23-24

IV. You set the example. Walk by the Precepts You Teach.

A. What made Paul an effective preacher? Teacher? Apostle?

B. 1 Cor. 11:1; Phil. 3:17; 2 Thess. 3:9

1. Parents – your children are looking to you for leadership.

C. Phil. 4:9 – can you tell your children to do this?

Conclusion:

A. Psa. 127:3-5 – children are a blessing from God.
