Quality Time with God

Introduction:

A.  Busy lives.  Often long to get away and spend quality time with spouse; family.

1.  What more important than finding/making time in our busy life for God?

2. It is tragic when Christians place little emphaisis on dining on the spiritual feast that is the word of God!

B.  We must be in tune with God!

1. Psa. 1:1-2; 63:6-8; 77:11-13; 143:5-6; 119:9-16

2.  These scriptures speak of a person who hungers for God

C. In NT we have words of Jesus – Mt. 5:6

1. Righteous people have an appetite for righteousness.

2. Psa. 143:6b – like a person starving; a person parched.

3. We can cultivate an appetite for righteousness!

a) God will not force feed us.

b) decision to eat/not eat lies with us.

D. We must develop the willingness for Him to feed us.

E. Everything that God wants to happen in our lives begins by learning!

1. to learn & grown in faith means there must be teaching!

2. We can succeed in our bible Study!

3. there are some pointers on how to do this.

E. Let’s look at the Bereans – Acts 17:11-12

 

I.  Quality time with God involves keeping an open mind.

A.  The Bereans received the word

1.  They listened without prejudice and without gullibility.

2.  Without such hearing and learning, no coming to Christ.

a.  John 6:45

3.  Good listeners always compliment the gospel.

a. Matt. 13:14-15

B.  They received the word with all readiness of mind.

1.  “Readiness” comes from a Greek work, (PROTHUMIA) and it indicates eagerness, willingness.

2.  Such a mind is absolutely vital to righteousness.

a. 2 Cor. 8:12

3.  Such is the honest and good heart of Luke 8:15

4.  Note:  such a heart exists before knowing the truth.

A. Jhn. 7:17

 

II.  Quallity time with God involves keeping an open bible.

A. examining the scriptures (i.e. Old Testament Scriptures.)

1.  They recognized the Scriptures as being authoritative.

2.  They recognized the need to prove all things. ! Thess. 5:21

3.  They were not satisfied to take the word of the preacher.

B. whether these things were so.

1.  Any teaching that does not harmonize with Scripture is not unworthy of acceptance.

2.  Their subsequent believing was based upon their accepting these things as being so.  (Rom. 10:17)

3.  Such examining and testing still vital in our confused religious world of today.

a. Are these things so?  Examine the Scriptures.

 

III. Quality Time with God means we must keep an open schedule.

A.  The Bereans examined the Scriptures daily.

1.    Open minds and open Bibles mean little where there is no time for their employment.

2.  In this way, men truly are redeeming the time.  (Eph. 5:16)

3.  Those on Pentecost received and continued steadfastly in the apostle’s doctrine in a “day by day” involvement.  (Acts 2:41-46)

4.  Daily involvement with the Scriptures essential to growing in faith, knowledge, and strength.  (1 Peter 2:2)

B.  The tragedy of schedules too busy for God and His word!

1.  No time for God? 

2.  What fools we are to clutter up our lives with common things and leave without heart’s gate.  The Lord of life and Life itself--our God!!  (Norman Trott)

 

Conclusion:

A.     Nothing more important than spending quality time with God!

B.     How’s your spiritual hunger?

C.    Use each day as an opportunity to grow closer to God!

D.    You can become His kind of person!
