My Hope is Built on Nothing Less 2004044 Topic # 344 Introduction: A. Hope is THE message of 1 Peter. 1. John is the apostle of love 2. Paul is the apostle of faith 3. Peter is the apostle of hope. B. Peter is someone wondrously equipped to teach us about hope. 1. Could it be, that with Jesus’ death – Peter’s hope waned? 2. Everything appeared to be over. a) Jhn 21; 3 – let’s go fishing. b) Had he given up? Denied Jesus 3 times. Of how much value did he feel he was to Jesus? 3. John 21:15-17 – his hope would be received. Jesus tells him – tend my sheep. 4. Peter, because of the death of Jesus, could testify that we can obtain a living hope of eternal life – the salvation of our souls. C. 1 Pet. 1:3-9.
I. Peter identifies what we’re hoping for. A. 1:4 – something imperishable & undefiled. 1. All we see, handle, taste, smell, hear in this world is subject to decay. a) Clinton Hamilton: nothing is abiding. The physical form of man with the passing of years begins its decay & finally in death will perish. b) God is not perishable, but eternal! c) The crown we seek does not perish or decay. 2. “Undefiled” means to be free from contamination. a) It is free from all that would render it to be undesirable. B. 1:4 – this inheritance will not fade away. 1. It is constant in its quality. Never diminished or dimmed. a) Unlike flower – here today gone tomorrow. b) Baby’s skin – smooth/soft – w/age wrinkles, hardens, loses beauty. 2. W/our heavenly reward – the influence of time has no effect. C. 1:4 – this inheritance is reserved in heaven “for you.” 1. The reserved inheritance is w/God in His dwelling. 2. “Reserved” here – to guard, keep, persevere…w/a happy issue.” 3. It’s been reserved for the Christian!
II. Just how important is this hope? A. I believe it is the source of motivation for the Christian! 1. Note what it did for Paul! a) Acts 20:22-27 – its how he could continue on – knowing that persecution imminent. b) Phil. 3:8-14 – it’s what allowed to say this here. c) Acts 16:25 – it’s what motivated him to sing praise while in jail. d) 2 Cor. 4:7-10 – it’s why he could testify to his perseverance in Christ. B. Heb. 6:19 – our hope can serve as the anchor of the soul! 1. It can keep us from being washed away w/the onrushing waters of life! 2. Hope gives us something to live for! Heaven! a) It can become our purpose in life. Our mission. Our plan of action. C. This hope produces true peace. Phil. 4:6-7 1. Peace that surpasses all understanding comes by turning to God. a) God is our shield! He is our impenetrable defense! b) While traversing through the sea of life – our boat may be rocked by some trials, temptations, and sin – but we can take confidence that God loves us and will protect us. c) No matter how bad it gets the Christian still has hope! d) Psa 27:1-6 2. 1 Pet 1:5 – we’re protected by the power of God – through faith – for salvation.
III. This hope is dependent upon our diligently seeking God. How? A. We must seek God – Psa. 27:8-10 B. 1 Pet 1:13 – Prepare your mind for action. 1. We must be mentally fit. Must pay attention to our spiritual life. a) Stay on top of your Christianity! 3. Discipline your mind. a) mind must be in constant preparation to discharge duties, endure trials b) Must be prepared for spiritual labor. 4. Pro. 4:23 5. Diligently Seek God by changing your thought pattern. Rom. 12:1-3; Eph. 4:22-24 C. 1:13 - Be sober in spirit. 1. Christianity is serious! Our journey here determines our spiritual destiny! a) Have 1 fragile, uncertain lifetime to do it. b) Journey to heaven is not a sightseeing trip! 2. “Sober” in 1:13 is to “be free from influence of intoxicants.” Vines: it’s used here meaning to “be on watch.” 3. We must give full attention to our Christianity! a) 2 Pet. 1:5-11 – giving all diligence to add these virtues to your life. D. 1:13 – hope to the end. 1. We must DSG for the entirety of life! Why? a) 1:3-5 – inheritance is not till the end! 2. The journey must be completed! E. 1:14 – travel as obedient children. 1. Not conformed to former lusts. 2. 1:22-23 – done through obedience. F. 1:15 – by putting on holiness. 1. Must become like Jesus! How is our behavior? Is it different from the world? a) because of what He has done for us – 1:18-19 2. So much has been done to enable us to travel.
Conclusion: A. Our hope is secure! B. 1:22-25 – based on God’s word – which does not fail. C. Titus 1:1-2 – based on God’s promise. D. Rom. 8:31-39 – as long as we DSG – we can be assured that NOTHING will separate us from God. E. What hope do you have? 1. Don’t place it in the temporal, shifting sands of the physical world! 2. Think on a higher plane! Col. 3:1-2
