Understanding Your Role in the Home

Introduction:

First role we ever play in life is that of a child. Very first relationship we sustain on earth is w/our parents. Not much more important than this: Why?  What happens with them will have a huge impact in many other aspects of life. How this relationship goes – can affect you for the rest of your life. Scriptures are not silent on this matter. Col. 3:20 is a matter of fact. Those still living at home under rule of parents need to remember 3 things: Your parents love you. They have an obligation to protect you. They have an obligation to provide for you.

I.  Evaluate your relationship with your parents.

A.     Garden of Eden? Sweet n Sour? Nice & easy? WWIII? Military School? Wall of Silence?

B.     Why would you choose this phrase to describe the relationship w/your parents?

C.    How many times have your felt:

1.      My parents don’t understand what it’s like to be a teenager?

2.      My parents don’t give my any freedom to make my own choices?

3.      My parents do not listen to me.  All they do is jump on me.

4.      I do not listen to my parents.

5.      There’s no use in trying any more – My parents & I will NEVER see eye to eye.

6.      My parents do not care about my problems – they do not want to be bothered.

I.  Pro. 1:8-9 – __________________ to your parents.

A.     Whether you realize this or not, your parents want the best for you!

B.     Your parents can give you the best advice on earth! Receive it w/readiness!

C.    1:9 – heeding your parents is _______________________!

II. Pro. 6:20-24 – Take what they say – _______________________.

A.     ___________ them on your heart.  This is your responsibility.

1.      Compare to Deut. 6:6-8.  They have a responsibility & you do to!

III. Pro. 23:22-28 – Hold onto the godly principles your parents teach you!

B.     Lk. 15:11-16 – how many have possessed the attitude of the prodigal son?

1.      Determined that warnings & admonitions of parents don’t apply, because it won’t happen to you?

2.      Don’t have to find out the hard way!
