What do we mean by the term God saturated? 1. We are talking about the person who is fully devoted to God. 2. A person w/a high view of God. 3. A person who is focused upon the holiness & sovereignty of God. C. Living a God saturated life means having a heart that is one with God. 1. A person who love what God loves; hates what God hates. 2. I think David = perfect role model for a God saturated life. 3. Although he not perfect – we see a passionate man who sought God’s heart. 4. He possessed a lofty view of God & knew the fullness of God’s favor upon his life. D. What is our view of God? 1. Do we regularly consider His holiness? Do we ponder our need to be cleansed form sin & his willingness to do so? 2. Do we depend on God for everything we do & acknowledge His sovereignty in everything? E. Psa. 5 – some say this written on 2nd morning after David’s flight from Absalom. 1. Psa. 5 2. This psalm provides a model for us in how we are to live truly for God & count as less important our desires/wants.
I. 5:1-3 – David’s contrition A. 5:1-2 – psalm begins with passionate pleading. 1. You can feel the intense emotion & energy pouring out of David’s heart. 2. He’s pleading with God for a hearing. 3. He understands that God is King over all. 4. Consider my groaning... a) Have we ever been in situation where words could not adequately express our grief? b) David is praying that God examine the secret & unexpressed desires of the soul. c) Rom. 8:26-27 B. 5:3 – Before David could begin the day – he had to converse w/God. 1. Note the confidence with which he prays. a) He prays w/confident expectation. b) He knows God would answer him 2. We also need this confidence – Js. 1:6-8 a) Prayer is our connection w/God! Are you online w/God? b) Whatever his answer to our prayer is – we must learn to trust he will answer it according to His perfect timing & will.
II. 5:4-6 – David’s conviction A. 5:4 – David understood God’s holiness. 1. Consider also Moses (Ex. 3); Isaiah (Isa. 6); Peter (Lk 5); John (Rev. 1) 2. God is infinitely holy – He cannot approve of; tolerate; or have fellowship with sin. 3. see Hab. 1:13; 1 John 1:5 B. 5:5 – God rejects all sin & sinners. 1. No sin will go undetected by God’s searching eyes. 2. Heb. 4:13 3. God rejects all who reject Him. C. 5:6 – and so, God judges sinners as an expression of His holiness. 1. 6a – reference to David’s enemies who were lying about him & slandering his character. 2. God detests bloodthirsty & deceitful people – and ultimately they will be confronted by God’s judgment. D. Let us remember an important lesson: It’s OK to pray for justice to be done. 1. Rom. 12:18-19; let us have faith that justice will be done.
III. 5:7-8 – David’s consecration A. Sinners can find acceptance w/God if they approach Him on God’s terms. 1. 7a – God will unconditionally forgive sinners who repent & believe. 2. 7b – David trembled because he recognized he approached God solely on the basis of God’s grace. 3. It is the same for us. a) We are unworthy. We are stained & dirty with sin. b) But yet…God is willing to receive us! B. It is in 5:8 – that we see David’s commitment to seek divine guidance in doing God’s will. 1. God will always lead us in the right direction. 2. God wants us to succeed. He wants us to be in heaven with him. C. He asks that God make his way smooth & straight. There are certainly things we can pray for.
IV. 5:9-10 – David’s condemnation A. He condemns his enemies. 5:9 B. We too can suffer from vicious attacks from the ungodly. 1. Mt. 5:10-12; John 15:18-20 C. 5:10 – David calls out for their destruction. 1. Before we write this off as selfishness – let us consider he prayers w/a holy zeal. 2. David wanted God to make right the wrongs he had suffered. 3. We can do this today. D. The driving issue in David’s heart was not his enemies opposition against him – but their rebellion against God!
V. 5:11-12 – David’s celebration A. David’s high view of God led to high praise for the Lord. 1. The righteous need to be glad in the Lord! 2. Despite our troubles; we can overflow w/excitement in God! 3. Those who truly know Him love Him & rejoice in Him w/hearts that overflow w/wonder & praise! This is the case as long as our hearts are turned toward Him. C. God’s divine blessing is like a shield – forming an impenetrable wall around the godly.
Conclusion: A. Anyone who is used by God will be consumed by a holy passion for God. 1. As long as a person thinks he can succeed by his own efforts – he will never pursue God w/deep desperation. 2. When we consider our own helplessness & inadequacies – and think of God’s greatness & goodness – it can be an overwhelming thing. 3. But let it be motivation for us to pursue God w/desperate urgency! 4. Only in our weakness will God’s strength be made full in us! B. Everything in life must be viewed from the perspective of the high & lofty character of God. 1. Even when circumstances are threatening – the “uplook” of faith always remains triumphant. 2. Such is the experience of a God saturated life. C. How’s your life? 1. 2 Cor. 5:14-15 2. 2 Cor. 5:17-18 – have you become a new creation? 3. 2 Cor. 6:1-2 – today is the day of salvation! D.
