Introduction:

A.     1 Sam. 8:19-21 – people of Israel demanded a king.

1.      Saul chosen.

2.      1 Sam. 12:14-15 – Saul told to fear the Lord.

B.     1 Sam. 13:8-10 – disobeys God by making a sacrifice.

1.      13:11-14 – Saul rejected as king – God would choose a man after His own heart.

2.      16:1-13 – David anointed as the new king of Israel.

 

I.  What does it mean to be a person after God’s own heart?

A.     A man after God’s own heart is not centered on self.

1.      Until age 5-6 – we think the world revolves around us.

2.      if your every thought needs to be considered; your every whim needs to be respected; you every desire needs to be met – there’s an immaturity that needs to be dealt with.

3.      We’re not the center of the universe!  Phil. 2:2-4

B.     A man after God’s own heart is aware of his role in the world.

1.      Ask:  How do I fit in with my family?  My community? This local congregation of believers?

2.      What gifts & talents has God given you?

C.    A man after God’s own heart knows anything is possible with God!

1.      God wants to use you!  Despite your past!  Even if you’ve failed before!

2.      David George: “God can use a crooked stick to hit straight licks if you’ll be obedient.

3.      Even if you’re facing the consequences of past sins – that does not hinder God’s ability to take & use you if you’ll obey Him!

a)     it’s a transformation process – Rom. 12:1-2

b)     done by putting on the new man – Eph. 4:24

4.      We don’t have to be subservient to the poor choices we’ve made in the past!

5.      Jesus came to forgive sin; to redeem; and redirect!

 

II.  A person after God’s own heart is God-conscious.

A.     We must desire God’s plan for our lives.

1.      Wonder if at one point in David’s life as he sat on hills looking over sheep – that he dreamed of being a successful sheep rancher?

2.      Wonder if he may have dreamed of taking over the family business?

3.      But…when God called him as king, he resigned his own plans for God’s!

4.      How attached are “our lives” and detached from allowing God to work through us – for His glory?

B.     We must walk to through open doors.

1.      We need to take advantage of opportunities that God blesses us with.

2.      Parents – you have an open door to raise your children in a godly; righteous way!

3.      Husbands/wives – you have an open door to glorify God through having a happy/harmonious marriage in an age where marriage has become a trivial thing.

4.      When we develop inner desires to be used by God – there are frequently matched with talents & abilities.

C.    We must work to apply God’s word to our lives.

Conclusion:

A.     Restored Failures:

1.      Above his fireplace in Beverly Hills – Fred Astaire hung a memo from his first tryout:  The MGM Director wrote: “Can’t act.  Slightly bald. Can dance a little.”

2.      Ray Kroc was an unsuccessful salesman of restaurant equipment for the majority of his life.  He didn’t sell a single hamburger until he reached age 52.  But from a few hamburger stands – he built the world’s largest fast-food chain – McDonalds.

3.      At age 23 – he was defeated in his campaign for legislature; he was defeated in his run for Congress at ages 34 & 39; for senate at age 45; and for VP at age 47, but Abraham Lincoln was elected as the President of the US at age 51 in 1860. 

4.      Point:  KEEP ON KEEPING ON!

B.     Every person here can be a person after God’s own heart. 

C.    It doesn’t matter what your background is – or what mistakes you’ve made.

D.    I N V I T A T I O N
