Subject: women of the Bible

Introduction:

A.     Only 12 scriptures in gospels that mention Mary Magdalene.

1.      first mentioned in Lk. 8:1-3 at the beginning of Jesus’ Galilean ministry.

a)     had 7 demons removed from her by Jesus.

b)     Some say 7 demons showed that they completely dominated her as 7 was a sign of completeness.

c)      Whatever- even having one demon was a terrible thing.

2.      Lk. 8:1-3 – she was one of many who were healed & came to Jesus.  Some who were healed w/her were:

a)     Joanna – wife of Chuza – Herod’s steward.  (Herod Antipas – son of Herod the Great.)

b)     Susanna – these three saw to the needs of the disciples from their own funds.

c)      No doubt they were moved by their gratitude for being healed.

3.      Term “Magdalene” is attached to her name for identification purposes.  She was from the town of Magdala – a city on the SW coast of Galilee.

4.      After the coverage here in Luke 8 – we do not hear of her again until the cross.

I.  At the cross.

A.     Mk. 15:40-41 – there w/Mary the mother of James & Salome.

1.        Jhn. 19:25 also mentioned Mary Magdalene – present w/the mother of Jesus.

2.        Lk. 23:49 – they stood at a distance – seeing these things.

B.     Remain there until Christ dies.  Were present when body of Christ was taken off the cross.

II.  During the resurrection events.

A.      Jesus dies of Friday.  Fri PM – body taken down & wrapped in linen cloth and placed in tomb of Joseph of Arimethea.  See Mt. 27:57-66.

B.      Lk. 23:56 – They rested on the Sabbath as commanded by the law.

C.      At dawn on Sunday AM – Mary Magdalene & the other Mary come to look the grave.

1.        Mk. 16:3-4 – rock in front of tomb extremely large – so large that they wondered who would remove it for them.

2.        Mt. 28:2b-9 – get to grave; angel greets them; tells them that Jesus resurrected & go tell disciples.

a)     28:9 – leave w/fear & great joy.

3.        Lk. 24:11 – report to apostles/various disciples … unbelief.

D.      Lk. 24:12; Jhn. 20:3 – Peter & John run to the tomb.

a.      John 20:3-4 – John outruns Peter to tomb – but does not go in.

b.      20:5-10  - see that body disappeared & return home.  (John. 20:10; Lk. 24:12)

c.      John 20:11 – by this time Mary Magdalene had returned to the tomb.  Find her standing there weeping & looking into the tomb.

d.      20:12-18 – Jesus first appears to her.  Mk. 16:9

E.      A closer look at their short conversation.

a.      Her ultimate grief expressed – John. 20:13, 15

b.      Jesus speaks & she recognizes Him.

c.      “Rabboni” literally means “my great Master”  a title given to Jewish teachers.  3 forms of this title.

1.      “rab” – or master – the lowest degree of honor.

2.      “rabbi” title of higher dignity.

3.      “rabboni” – My great master the most honorable of all.

d.      the last title reserved for only 7 people in Jewish religious circles – all persons of great position.

e.      here it = expression of joy & an acknowledgement of Him as her Lord & Master.

f.        20:17 – what does this mean?

g.      Barnes:  the language of Jesus may mean this: "Do not approach me now for this purpose. Do not delay here. Other opportunities will yet be afforded to see me. I have not yet ascended-that is, I am not about to ascend immediately, but shall remain yet on earth to afford opportunity to my disciples to enjoy my presence." From Matt 28:9, it appears that the women, when they met Jesus, held him by the feet and worshipped him. This species of adoration it was probably the intention of Mary to offer, and this, at that time, Jesus forbade, and directed her to go at once and give his disciples notice that he had risen.

F.       20:18 – Mary goes & announces these things to the disciples.  Don’t hear of her again.

III.  Myths about Mary Magdalene.

A.     Lk. 7:37-38 – unnamed woman anoints feet of Jesus.

a.      Right after this (next chapter) we first read of Mary Magdalene.

b.      Some say Mary’s hometown of Magdala was a city full of prostitution.

c.      No reliable evidence to connect Mary w/this.

B.     She is not the “Mary” found in Mt. 26:7; Mk. 14:3; Jhn. 18:3 as this was probably the sister of Lazarus.

C.    Some also say that Mary was the woman in Jhn. 8 who was caught in adultery.  Again…no evidence.

Conclusion:

A.      In the 12 references to her – we see someone who comes to Jesus & follows Him – providing for He & His disciples out of her own means.

B.      Her dedication grows – to the point that she is at the cross in support of the man who the masses hated enough to hang on a cross.

C.     Seen in the moments of the day Christ resurrected.

a.      Her love & devotion to Christ are an example to us today.
