Subject: women of the Bible

Introduction:

  1. Dorcas was a seamstress - she made clothing and even gave some to the poor.
  2. There was nothing glamorous about her life - yet the Holy Spirit chose to record her goodness for all of time.

C.  What lessons can we learn from her? 

 

I.  TABITHA - DORCAS (an ordinary person)

A.     A disciple, a follower of Jesus.  Acts 9:36

1.      Disciples called Christians first in Antioch. Acts 11:26

B.     Full of good works and charitable deeds. Acts 9:36

1.      She let her light shine.  Matthew 5:13-16

2.      Used the ability she had.  Matthew 25:14-27

3.  She did what she could.  Mark 14:6-8

C.  She became ill and died.  Acts 9:37

                                   

II.  RAISED FROM THE DEAD

A.     They sent for Peter.  Acts 9:38-39

B.     “Tabitha, arise.”  Acts 9:40

1.      Presented her alive.  Acts 9:41

C.    Why did Peter do this?  Many believed.  Acts 9:42

1.      To be with Christ is better.  Philippians 1:21-23

2.      Blessed are the dead.  Revelation 14:13

a)     Their works follow (not forgotten).  Rev. 14:13

3.      Dead in Christ shall rise first.  I Thessalonians 4:13-18

 

III.  LIVING AS A CHRISTIAN:

A.     Is not about fame or pre-eminence.  Matthew 18:1-4

1.      It’s about serving.  Matthew 20:25-27

B.     Is not about possessions.  Luke 12:15-21

C.    Is about pressing on to the end.  Philippians 3:12-14

D.    Is about receiving the crown.  James 1:2-4, 12

 

Conclusion:

  1. Dorcas was not a famous person in her time, or involved in some great project to benefit the whole world.
  2. She was just a disciple living a very ordinary life serving
