I. Visit national cemetery in Crow Agency, MT. A. markers throughout national memorial reading “US soldier fell here.” No name – just a marker where a soldier fell. 1. 125 years since battle. Much happened since then – but in scheme of eternity – just barely anytime elapsed since then. 2. Wonder: who were these men? What where their life like? What did their families think when they received word of their death? What was going through the minds of these men as they faced death? 3. Regardless of how one looks at the Indian wars – we should admire their sacrifice for the country. B. Heb writer speaks of veterans of a spiritual war. Those who have gone before us. 1. Heb. 11:32-34 – prophets. 2. 11:35 – unidentified women who remembered for their faith. 3. 11:36-38 – countless others who stood up for God.
II. God did not preserve their names for us. A. But…they sacrificed/persevered in hope of eternal life. B. 11:39 – gained approval through their active faith. C. 12:1 – they stand as an example & a motivation for Christians today!
III. Throughout this world – there are scores of Christians toiling in obscurity. A. think of godly mothers who toil at home – training up their children to follow Christ. B. Think of everyday Christians who role up sleeves – and get involved in Lord’s work. 1. waging war against the devil. 2. Their daily activities often go w/o ceremony or earthly commendation. C. One day, their lives will end – known only to family & friends. But unmarked in the graveyard of brotherhood greats. D. Day by day – many go & seek to brighten lives by walking in the light. 1. great things are done by saints that never make the bulletin, announcements, or bulletin board. 2. but God sees those efforts & will reward. 3. Let me encourage the Christians in this place to stand up – fight – and do good – not for personal glory – but for the glory of Almighty God. 4. Col. 3:17
IV. Conclusion: A. Soldiers in MT. Who died that day…..wonder if they had any idea that they were going to die that day. B. Although we have no way of knowing – figure that most of them were not NT Christians. 1. Wonder what they would do now if they had to do it all over again. 2. Wonder if they would have done some things differently. C. Unfortunately, their eternal fate is sealed. Happens at death. D. What is going to be your eternal destiny? E. I N V I T A T I O N |
