Topic # 09

Introduction:

A.     One thing world agrees upon – shun mourning.

1.      forget your troubles; drown your sorrows; don’t face reality.

2.      be has happy as you can – steer clear of trouble.

3.      The largest industries in America today center around people having fun; forgetting about their worries.

a)     Disney; Cable companies; Las Vegas; etc.

B.     But notice Mt. 5:4

1.      what exactly, is Jesus referring to here?

2.      Look also at parallel texts – Lk. 6:21, 25.

a)     blessed…weep now….you shall laugh

b)     woe….laugh now….you shall mourn.

C.    Meaning here is spiritual in nature.

1.      As in 5:3 – blessed are the poor in spirit did not refer to “poor in finances” – meaning refers to poverty of spirit.

2.      it also important to understand – not talking about natural mourning – like that suffered in the loss of a loved one.

D.    As we get into this lesson – we’ll look at this beatitude as exemplified in Jesus; Paul; & how we are to apply the meaning of this beatitude to our life.

I.  This beatitude as exemplified in the life of Jesus.

A.     Jesus = ultimate example.  Something I learned this week:

1.      No record that Jesus ever laughed:

a)     Jhn. 2:13-17; Mk. 3:5 – he was angry

b)     Lk. 4:2 – He was hungry

c)      Jhn. 4:7; 19:28 – he was thirsty

2.      No record that he ever laughed – but must watch from arguing from silence – he could have laughed – just not told.

B.     Isa. 53:2-5, 7 – would be known as the Man of Sorrows.

1.      Jhn. 11:35; Lk. 19:41-44 – shows that this prophecy fulfilled.

C.    Compare the biblical picture of Jesus w/the brightness/joviality of the world.

1.      Big comparison that we need to take notice of.

2.      There is a need for the Christian to be serious in this life.  Priorities must be focused upon; needs must be attended to.

II.  Look at this beatitude as exemplified in Paul’s life.

A.     1 Cor. 11:1 – need to follow his example.

1.      Paul often found himself grief stricken about sin.  Cried in agony.

a)     Rom. 7:14-25 – see 7:14-15, 17.

b)     We too need to be sorrowful for sin – feel the sense of hopelessness that is associated with it.

c)      There is a battle going on between flesh/spirit.  We all need to lament over our short comings.

3.      8:18, 23 – there are sufferings we must endure while we on earth.

B.     2 Cor. 5:2-4 – talked about how we groan w/the burdens of this world – but are looking for something better.

C.    Note his teaching in Titus 2:

1.      2:2 – aged men…temperate/dignified/sensible

2.      2:3 – aged women….to be reverent in behavior

3.      2:4 – younger women….to be sensible

4.      2:6 – younger men…to be sensible

5.      2:7 – must act w/doing all things w/purity of doctrine/dignified/etc.

D.    In all of this – we must be sensible/serious about our Christianity!

III.  Practical Applications for today’s Christian:

A.     Those who mourn = those who grieve over sin.

1.      we must be convicted of our sin.

2.      Must realize how it separates us from God & how serious of an issue sin is.  It is a big deal – no matter what the devil says!

3.      for one to be truly converted in b/c Christian – one must be convicted before there is conversion.

4.      Acts 3:19 – there must be a negative before a positive!

B.     True Christian is one who daily sees his unholiness against the backdrop of God’s holiness.

1.      sees his ugliness in contrast w/God’s beauty.

2.      realizes that w/o God he is helpless & w/o hope of salvation.

3.      will have a self examination daily!

a)     what have I done? Said? Thought?

b)     Could find many things to weep over!

c)      Ask: what makes me do these things?  What can I do to do better?

C.    True Christian is one who mourns at the sins of others.

1.      Jesus – Jhn. 11:35; 19:41-44

a)     Jesus saw what sin did to live/hearts of people

b)     Over city of Jerusalem – refused righteousness & repentance; refused it’s Savior – was doomed.

2.      When we look at world/ society – we should be sad for the state the world is in.

D.    Here = contrast.

1.      world: eat/drink/be merry.  Don’t think about/worry about your sin.

2.      Christian:  constantly sees/mourns the presence of sin in himself, in the world, in the church.

Conclusion:

A.     They shall be comforted.

1.      2 Cor. 7:9 – mourning produces repentance; which draws us to Jesus.

2.      Rom. 7:24-25 – no one can say: “Thanks to God through Christ” before he has said: “O wretched man that I am.”

B.     Js. 4:9-10 – we must weep/sorrow for sin – before we comforted.

C.    Before we can get the peace that passes understanding – Phil. 4:6-7.

D.    As Christians we are to be:

1.      Sorrowful but not morose

2.      Mournful but not miserable

3.      Serious and sober minded but not solemn and sullen

4.      Grave but not grumpy.

E.     Have you been truly converted?

1.      This means that you must be convicted!

2.      Weep/sorrow for sin.
