The Bible & Baptism (1)

Subject: baptism

Introduction:

A.     Baptism = topic that receives great deal of attention in Bible.

1.      NASV – 83 references to words baptize; baptized; or baptism in the NT.

2.      Majority of those references (52) have to deal with a person being baptized either by John; Jesus; Apostles; or other Christians.

B.     Most all groups calling themselves “Christian” practice some form or mode of baptism.

1.      While most religions perform some sort/form of baptism – as many as 90% teach that it is not a requirement for salvation.

2.      Those that do – earn for themselves a listing on the Internet cult awareness site.

3.      This shows how strongly some reject this teaching.

C.    Ever found yourself in heated religious conversation b/c the subject of baptism was brought up?

1.      In many religious circles, the subject is not brought up for fear of offending someone.

2.      Definitely a lot of confusion in the religious world on this vital subject.  Just about every “church” teaches something different on the subject.

3.      Purpose:  not to offend someone – we don’t set out to do that.

a)     But we do wish to present factual bible teaching on this matter.

b)     Visiting with us today?  Thanks for being here.  You are our honored guest.

c)      Questions welcome.  We invite you to hold up what is taught here today w/what is written in the Scriptures.

d)     We don’t profess to have all the answers.  I’m a Bible student just like everyone else.

e)     We should view today’s lesson as an opportunity to learn & study God’s word together.

I.  What exactly is water baptism?

A.     Simply put:  an immersion in water.

1.      Thayer: immersion; submersion.

2.      Vines: consisting of the processes of immersion, submersion and emergence (from bapto, "to dip"), is used (a) of John's "baptism," (b) of Christian "baptism,"

B.     Baptism is pictured as a burial.

1.      A Burial in water would mean that sprinkling; pouring; or any other method besides immersion in water is not valid.

2.      Jhn. 3:23 – involves much water.

3.      Acts 8:36-39 – Philip & the Eunuch went down into the water and up out of the water.

4.      Rom. 6:3-4 – Baptism is a burial into Jesus Christ.

a)            Col. 2:12-13 – Before coming to Christ – we dead in transgressions; dead in sin.  Dead spiritually.

b)            Rom. 6:3-7 – we bury the old man (put to death) through baptism.

c)             Arise to walk in newness of life (6:4)

d)            A new creation – 2 Cor. 5:17-21

e)            SEE CHART!

C.    Most of the religious world teaches the exact opposite of this!

1.      SEE CHART

2.      Baptism in the denominational world has it backwards!  There is no Biblical pattern for such!

II.  What is Baptism for?

A.     It is for the remission of sin!

1.      Jhn. 19:34 – Christ’s blood was shed in His death: soldiers pierced His side with a spear – immediately blood & water came out.

2.      1 Jhn. 1:7 teaches us that the blood of Christ cleanses us from all sin.

3.      How does one come into contact w/the blood of Christ in order to be saved?  T H R O U G H  B A P T I S M !

B.     Rom. 6:3-4 – reach the death of Christ when we are buried in baptism!  Thus coming into contact w/His blood!

1.      Acts 2:38 – tells us upon our baptism – our sins are remitted. (Forgiven – NASV).

a)            Note:  baptism FOR forgiveness.  Not baptism because you have already been forgiven!

b)            Compare w/Eph. 1:7.  Forgiveness through His blood.

3.      1 Pet. 3:21 – It is the answer of a good conscience toward God.  Compare w/Col. 1:13-14 – in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

4.      Acts 22:16 – Baptism washes away our sin. Compare with Rev. 7:14 – made white.  See also Rev. 1:5 – released us from our sins by His blood!

D.    From the CHART and the reading of the Scriptures above – we see an unmistakable connection between baptism and the blood of Christ.

E.     Baptism adds one to the Lord’s church – Acts 2:41, 47; 1 Cor. 12:13; Jhn. 3:3-5

F.     It puts one into Christ – Gal. 3:26-27.  See also 2 Cor. 5:17

G.    It is to for salvation – Mk. 16:16; Titus 3:5; 1 Pet. 3:21

H.    One not baptized for these reasons is missing out on God’s Grace!

Conclusion:

A.     Tonight…our special series of lessons will conclude by discussing who water baptism is for & is it essential for salvation?  Hope you can come back to this service!

B.     Where are you?  Jhn. 3:3-5 – have you been born again through baptism?

1.      Mk. 16:16 – are you saved?

C.    Can we help you?  Acts 8:37-38 – you can be baptized today – act upon your belief!
