Our Need for a Savior
Introduction:
It is because of Christ’s coming to earth, dying on the cross, and being resurrected on the 3rd day that the Christian has hope of eternal life—if he lives in continued obedience to the will of God. But….have you ever wondered why Jesus had to die on the cross? Couldn’t there have been another way? What is God’s plan for man? What does he expect of us? Why does God expect man to obey all that is in the Bible? In this morning’s lesson we’ll seek to answer the above questions as we explain our need for a Savior.
I. Why the Bible?
A. God did not give us the Bible to restrict us from enjoying life.
1. Yes...we must keep His commandments—Deut. 10:12-13.
2. The Bible is God’s instruction for living life as He would have us to live!
B. Those who apply the Scriptures become more like Him! - Mt. 5:48
C. Jhn. 13:34-35; Eph. 4:32—we can follow His commandments by loving others.
II. Man has a problem—SIN!
A. All have sinned—1 Jhn. 3:4; Rom. 3:9-10, 23
1. Result of sin: eternal death—Rom. 6:23
2. Lk. 7:36-50—all men are lost and need to come to Christ for salvation!
B. No such thing as going to heaven from just living a “good & moral” life.
1. Case in point: Acts 10:2, 6
2. Forgiveness is the only way we can be saved!
III. God has an answer to our problem.
A. God’s answer is Christ! Rom. 3:21-26
1. God can’t overlook our sins. Christ died a death we deserve!
2. Jesus stood in our place!
B. Isa. 53:1-10—a picture of God’s plan to save man.
IV. How do we obtain this great salvation?
A. Eph. 1:7-12—we must come to Christ and respond to His terms of pardon!
1. Heb. 5:8-9—must obey Him!
2. We must be willing to do whatever He has prescribed to be saved!
B. Acts 2:21, 37-38—note what these were told to do to be saved!
C. Heb. 10:22-26—Christians must continue to hold fast their confession!
1. The Christian will sin. He must ask God for forgiveness—1 Jhn. 1:7-2:5
2. By confessing our sins when we fall short we can be “cleansed from all sin.”
Conclusion:
A. How about you? Do you understand God’s purpose for you?
B. He died so you can live for Him! 2 Cor. 5:15-18
C. Obey the gospel today!
