Keeping His Commandments
Introduction:
Keeping the commandments of God is of great necessity. In fact, it is all important. Some take 7:19 and say it means that keeping the commandments of God is nothing. Some use this verse along with 2 Cor. 3:6 to call those who strive to “obey” God’s will “legalists.” Tonight’s lesson will reveal that there is great profit in keeping the commandments of God.
Keeping His commandments will help one obtain eternal life.
A. Mt. 19:17—must do something to go to heaven!
1. Not to “earn” salvation—rather to do what expected.
2. Mt. 7:21-27.
B. Col. 3:16-17—everything must be done for God’s glory.
Keeping His commandments will demonstrate our love for God.
A. Jhn. 14:15, 21—those who keep commandments love Him
B. 1 Jhn. 5:2—those who keep traditions of men love themselves!
1. 1 Cor. 4:6
2. Are you going beyond Paul’s admonition?
III. We can prove we know Him by keeping His commandments
A. 1 Jhn. 2:3-4—are you keeping His commandments?
B. 1 Jhn. 5:3—His commandments not burdensome!
1. Must be willing to do whatever it takes!
IV. True happiness can be obtained by keeping His commandments
A. Rev. 1:3—will be blessed by keeping them!
1. Produces confidence; true happiness!
2. Not an overbearing arrogance.
B. Rev. 22:7; 22:14
1. Approach our Christianity with hope and confident expectation.
Conclusion:
A. Keeping the commandments of God = everything!
B. Involves the plan of salvation—Jhn. 6:29; Titus 2:11-12
1. Take advantage of the grace of God!
2. Do what He expects YOU to DO!
