Keeping the Commandments of God2000024 Subject: first principles Introduction: A. Lesson tonight focuses upon the necessity of keeping commandments of God. 1. here Paul teaching that some things such as circumcision & uncircumcision are nothing in & of themselves. 2. keeping the commandments of God is something. It is all important. B. Some take 7:19 & says it means that keeping the commandments of God is nothing. 1. many in religious world disdain the ideas of keeping commandments. 2. call those who “endeavor” to keep the commandments “commandment keepers” or “legalists.” 3. Passage in 2 Cor. 3:6 often raised to go w/the objection of abiding w/in the commandments of God. C. Tonight’s lesson will reveal that there is a great profit in keeping the commandments of God.
I. Keeping His commandments will help one obtain eternal life. A. Mt. 19:171. there is something WE MUST do if we wish to enter heaven! Keep the commandments of God. a) not doing this to earn reward – could never earn reward – but do it b/c we EXPECTED to do to obtain eternal life. b) Mt. 7:24-27 – most apply the teaching of the word of God. No matter how hard, seemingly small, outdated, etc. 2. Mt. 7:21-23 – those who go against the commandments will not go to heaven. Only suffer rejection on judgment. B. Col. 3:16-17 – must do everything w/proper religious authority. Not add to/take away – but do to be assured of abiding for ever.
II. Keeping His commandments will demonstrate our love for God. A. Jhn. 14:15, 211. want to be loved by Christ & God the Father? Keep His commandments. a) those who keep his commandments are his children. b) We also demonstrate our true love/faith in the Lord by following His commands and His commands only. B. 1 Jhn. 5:21. Means the pure unadulterated word of God – NOT one that polluted w/doctrines traditions of man. 2. Mt. 15:8-9 – no profit in keeping man’s doctrines/traditions. Many love themselves better than God. 3. Takes faith to go by the Scriptures & the Scriptures only. But of necessity! a) 1 Cor. 4:6 b) use the patter to prove our love!
III. We can prove we know Him by keeping the commandments of God. A. 1 Jhn. 2:3-41. Do you know the Lord? Are you keeping His commandments? 2. This involves getting involved in the Lord of God – knowing more as we grow up in Christ. a) we b/g to understand the person & nature of God. b) Why He loves us so, the danger of sin. 3. Most importantly – can learn how to be saved. To be saved, certain commandments must be met/observed. a) faith repentance b) confession, baptism B. 1 Jhn. 5:3 – His commandments are not burdensome1. not expect us to do something we not able. 2. can do them w/o regret, hardship – if we have the proper attitude. a) b/c we want to go to heaven b) b/c we want Christ to be glorified. 3. Have never understood why baptism, repentance, & other tenants of God’s word viewed as so cumbersome/hard… 4. Remember 5:3a.
IV. True Happiness Can be Obtained by Keeping His Commandments. A. Rev. 1:3 – blessed is he who hears & keeps. 1. Why? This one can obtain salvation. 2. This one can have confidence – not overbearing, better than you arrogance – but confidence! B. Rev. 22:7; 22:14 – the one who keeps his commandments will obtain the reward. Can approach Christianity with hope & confident expectation – not with doubt & fear.
Conclusion: A. We can say in conclusion – keeping the commandments of God is everything! 1. This embraces the whole realm of faith – Jhn. 6:29. Belief is command. 2. This takes in the whole idea of grace – grace comes to man through teaching the commandments – Titus 2:11-12 C. This takes into account love. Love = the golden chain that binds. Jhn. 14:15 – love = one of the commandments of God. D. Keeping the commandments everything! E. I N V I T A T I O N
