Responsibilities of Children

            This is a needed lesson.  Col. 3:20 tells children to obey parents in all things.  Both parents and children need to be aware of their responsibilities to each other and most importantly, to God!  Many kids today, have absolutely no concept of God’s desire for children to maintain respect and honor for their parents.  Let that not be said about any of our young people here!  Tonight’s lesson will focus on this important topic.

I.  Col. 3:20—Obey your parents in ALL things.
            A.  See also Ex. 20:12. 
                        1.  Seems to be a tendency for youth not to show proper respect.
                        2.  Eph. 6:2—under the commandment of Christ to honor parents w/obedience.
            B.  Hurtful acts,...cruel speaking….general disobedience prohibited by God!

II.  Consider the OT Law on responsibilities of children.
            A.  Deut. 21:18-21—disobedient, stubborn, rebellious—could be stoned to death!
                        1.  Read of many unruly children in OT times?
            B.  Must reject peer pressure and submit to the power of Christ—Eph. 6:1

III.  Some words of wisdom to young people.
            A.  Prov. 13:1—want to be wise? Listen to your parents.
            B.  Prov. 15:5—Listen to the experience of your parents!
            C.  Prov. 17:25—You are your parents reputation.  Guard it carefully!
            D.  Prov. 23:22—be there for parents when they enter their senior years.

IV.  How can you honor your parents?
           
A.  Express affection for them!
                        1.  By actions—2 Cor. 8:24; Jhn. 3:18
                        2.  By telling them that you love them.
            B.  By being the kind of person you should be.
                        1.  Being a good/honorable person/becoming a Christian
                        2.   You bring reproach on them if you fail to live up to godly ways!
            C.  Parents...you need to provide the proper example—Lk. 5:22

V.     Words of Advice for young people….
      A.  Success is not always measured by how much money you have.
      B.  A relationship with God will secure your mind on the things of Christ
      1.  Be faithful in the things of God—be a “doer” and not a “hearer” only.
      2.  Be honest w/all men and yourself.
      C.  Provide your employer an honest days work.
      D.  Train your children to be God fearing & loving.
      E.  Ecc. 7:1—your reputation is more important than your bank account balance!
