(Eph 6:1-3)   (Col 3:20)

1999070

I,  Notice .. “Obey your parents in all things ...” (Col 3:20)

A.      This was the primary point of the fifth commandment (Honor they father and thy mother.” (Ex. 20:12).

1.      We all need to be reminded of this once in a while ... this is scripture.

2.      There seems to be a tendency for youth not to show respect for their parents/grand...

3.      Mom and Dad are not “survivors” of an out dated age .. unlearned and ignorant of 90’s.

4.      Samuel Clements (Mark Twain) .. a humorists of note .. said in a speech in NYC .. When I was sixteen, I thought my Father was the most ignorant man I had ever seen; but ten years later I decided he was brilliant .. I just wondered how the old man had learned so much in ten years.”

5.      We are not always what we seem to be in the eyes of children.

a.      Sometimes it takes them a little longer to know the facts.

B.      Are we under the law of Moses?  ... NO ...  (Gal 3:22-26)

1.      The Ten Commandments have no bearing on our lives today.

2.      Each of the Commandments have been brought forward into the New Testament except the 4th .. “Remember the Sabbath and keep it Holy.”

3.      Paul brought forward the responsibilities of children in (Eph 6:2) .. of our text.

a.      This places us under the commandment of Christ ..

b.      We are to honor our parents with obedience.

1.         That goes for grand parents as well .. The Bible no distinction between the two.

c.      We are prohibited to do hurtful acts .. cruel speaking .. and disobedience.

1.         We are to give and do loving things for them .. little things mean a lot to parents.

2.         This includes respect .. these are the only parents you have!!!!

d.      The context of this commandment is found in our text (Eph 6:1).

1.         Your parents care .. protect and sustain each of you.

2.         it is a matter of right to obey your parents.

e.      This passage does not limit you obedience to that which is within God’s law.

1.         If your obedience necessitates being disobedient to God God is to be obeyed.

2.         God’s Law has priority over man’s law.

f.        This does not give you reason to disobey because you do not want to do something.

1.         You are to obey your parents .. or suffer the consequences of disobedience.

4.      The ideal situation is to have Christian parents who are strong in the faith ...  Blessed.

II.  The O. T. law was completely different than the laws governing civil problems today.

A.     The disobedient .. stubborn .. rebellious .. drunken son who would not obey in the O.T.

5.      Was to be taken to the elders and they could have him stoned to death (Deu 21:18-21).

a.      That is the way they dealt with unruly children under the Law of Moses.

b.      Needless to say .. we read of very few unruly children.

C.       We have laws today that are not adept to the problems of youth crime ..

1.      Most of the time they are too lenient.

2.      We have parents who do not care what their children are into ..

a.      And quick to deny their guilt when they are apprehended.

b.      How can we expect our children to act properly .. if the parents do not set the example.

D.      Peer pressure is great among our young people .. but the power of Christ is much more!

1.      “Children obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right”  (Eph 5:1).

III.  Permit me to offer some wisdom to our young people .. regardless who they are.

A.     “A wise son heareth his father’s correction; but a scoffer heareth not rebuke” (Pr 13:1).

1.  If you want to be wise .. listen to your parents.

B.     “A fool despiseth his father’s correction; but he that regardeth getteth prudence” (Pr 15:5).

1. Your parents have been there and done that .. experience teaches many truths.

C.     “A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bore him” (Pr 17:25).

1.  Remember .. you are your parents reputation .. you need to guard it carefully.

D.     “Hearken unto they father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old” (Pr 23:22).

1.  your father has years of knowledge .. you can learn from him .. it is your responsibility

a.      To see that your mothers are cared for in her senior years.

IV.  What are some of the ways you can honor your parents?

A.     We can express our affection for them in unmistakable ways ..

a.      We show our love by our actions towards our parents.

b.      your parents will rejoice when they see you express your love for them.

1.         Tell them you love em ... often.

2.      One of the last things Jesus did on the cross was to provide for his mother physical welfare.

3.      While he was dying on the cross .. he looked out over the crowd and said to John ..

4.      “Behold thy mother!  And from that hour the disciple took her unto his own house” (Jhn 19:27).

5.      .  Parents give themselves .. sacrifice many times .. to bring their children into this world.

a.      As you grow older .. they sacrifice many things in order for you to have what you need.

b.      Many times .. what you want!

6.      Children ... (all) .. provide for your parents needs .. if necessary .. in the latter days of their lives.

a.      You will receive untold blessings .. remember .. life has a way of balancing things.

The tender words unspoken

The letters never sent,

The long forgotten messages,

The wealth of love unspent ...

For these some hearts are breaking,

For those some loved ones wait,

So show them that you care for them

Before it is too late.

B.     Each one of you can honor your parents by being the men and women we should be.

1.  When a child grows into adulthood .. becomes a good and honorable person ..

a.      We reflect on our parents.

2.  The biography of a great man or woman is a crowning point for the parents.

b.       You bring reproach on them when we do not live up to what we should be.

c.      Both in this world and in our spiritual lives.

d.      Parents .. Grant .. you have a role in this .. you need to provide encouragement ..

C.    You need to provide that example to excel in this life and in the Lord. Best teacher!

1.       They need to be trained as Christ was trained by his earthly parents (Luk 5:22).

V.      Let me give to you young people some advice ...

A.     Success in life is not measured by how much money you make.

1.      These are the important things that make a life successful.

a.      A good education will provide you common sense to make decisions.

b.      A relationship with the Lord will secure your mind on the things of Christ.

c.      A prayer life will give you the source of your inner comforts.

d.      Pick your friends very carefully .. you become as those you are with.

e.      Be faithful in the things of the Lord .. Give liberally .. attend the worships ..

f.        Be a “doer” and not a “hearer” only.

g.      Seek a mate for life within the Lord’s church ...

1.      There will be less demands that will strain your marriage with Christ and your spouse.

h.     Be honest with all men .. you will then be trustworthy.

i.        Provide your employer an honest days work .. you will be dependable and conscientious.

j.        Train your children to be God fearing and loving.

k.      Simply .. be yourself .. do not imitate others .. they will fail you.

l.        Your reputation is more important than how much you have in the bank ..  (Ecl 7:1).

Conclusion:

A.     Well .. how do you measure up?

B.     Are you doing what is expected in your family?  Willingly .. or .. Grudgedly?

C.    Only you can answer these questions ..

D.    Love your parents .. they are the only ones you will ever have.
