Have You Been Sanctified? 1999051 Introduction A. Text of today’s lesson based out of 1 Cor. 1:1-3. 1. Going to focus upon the phrase in 1 Cor. 1:2. 2. What does it mean to be sanctified in Christ Jesus? 3. When one is sanctified…does it imply that in someway he is perfect of sinless – as some maintain? B. That the bible talks about sanctification – in a variety of ways should be understood. Observe: 1. 1 Tim. 4:1-5 – food can be sanctified. 2. 2 Tim. 2:21 – A man can be sanctified for some task. 3. 1 Cor. 7:14 – Husbands/wives can be sanctified in some sense. 4. 1 pet. 3:15 – God is to be sanctified by man in some sense. C. While we see that the things just mentioned can/are to be sanctified…it is of utmost importance to get a proper knowledge of just what the term sanctified/sanctification means. 1. Gk. Wd. Means literally: set apart. 2. Implies an action done by God – not man. 3. If a person has been sanctified by God – he has been separated (set apart) for holy purposes. 4. It important to understand that sanctification does not describe a moral action on man’s part (morality doesn’t sanctify) but sanctification is an action of God – whereby he is set apart as a holy people – people separated from the ordinary. D. This sanctification is in a spiritual sense – separated from certain things &to certain things – to be pleasing to God. E. Lesson today will explain 3 things: 1. how are people sanctified? 2. Who are the sanctified? 3. What are sanctified people called?
I. How may people be sanctified? A. God is said to sanctify people. 1. Jude 1:1-2 B. The Holy Spirit is said to sanctify people. 1. 2 Thess. 2:13-14. C. How does god & the spirit sanctify? 1. Remember…sanctification is an action of God –NOT man! 2. Man could try all he wanted to – but w/o God he can’t be sanctified. 3. Is the action of man’s sanctification a mystery? Is it some kind of mysterious operation by which man cannot explain? a) some teach some kind of DIRECT OPERATION upon man’s heart/mind. b) almost to point that God physically changes a persons’ desire/etc. c) some say…man has absolutely NO control over this – that there is nothing that a person can do – but accept God’s plan for him. D. How does God sanctify? Through His word! 1. Jhn. 17:17 – sanctified by the truth – the word of God. By applying the STANDARD to our lives. 2. Heb. 10:8-10 – one said to be sanctified by new covenant – which is found in the teachings of the NT. E. God sanctifies (sets apart) a person when he makes the commitment to apply (bring himself into compliance with) the teachings of Almighty God – found in the NT. 1. Many call themselves Christians. 2. But NEVER come to knowledge of the Scriptures much less apply what is contained therein. a) some: Christian is only name/church attendance/conversion NOT necessary. NOT important. b) Superficial in nature. 3. Sanctification = an action by God – but it WILL NOT take place until man applies Scriptures in obedience to the will of God! a) comes through study of His word – 2 Tim. 2:15 b) Scriptures can make us complete – 2 Tim. 3:16-17; Js. 1:22-25. 4. You wish to be set apart by God as His child? You owe it to yourself to get your life in order!!!! F. God & the Spirit sanctify people through the Word which they revealed.
II. Who are the Sanctified? A. Those that are in the church. See Eph. 5:23-27. 1. those in the church have been set aside by God – from rest of the world for a holy purpose. 2. Acts 2:47 – the church is comprised of those who have been saved. 3. Thus: saved people are sanctified people. B. How does one b/c saved? What must one do in order to be sanctified by God? 1. one b/c sanctified at the time he obeys the gospel of Christ. 2. When a person: a) hears the gospel preached – Rom. 10:17 b) believes as a result of what he has heard & places his hopes/trust in Jesus Christ. c) Repents of his sins & confesses that Jesus is the Son of God. d) Is baptized into Christ – having his sins washed away… 1) Acts 22:16. 2) 1 Cor. 6:11 3) they weren’t sanctified…until they had been washed in the waters of baptism. 4) They had been justified in the name of the Lord Jesus. e) at this point…one separated by God to enter into His service. 3. he b/c a part of the chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a person of God’s own possession. C. When we find out what one must do to be saved – we find out what one must do to be sanctified. 1. this something that majority of people on earth have not done. 2. That is, obeyed the gospel! D. Who are the sanctified? They are Christians who strive to conduct themselves in a morally pure manner. 1. Rom. 12:1-2; Col. 3:1-2 they have set there mind on things above. 2. That which is separated to God MUST BE PURE! 3. MUST CONTINUE throughout one’s life. 4. Christ’s blood will wash away our sins – b/c of this we can be separated to God – but moral purity comes through continued obedience to God ON OUR PART! a) 2 Cor. 6:16-18-7:1 b) This done thorough the application of the word! 5. emphasis on sanctification in NT = an inward transformation leading to purity of thought/deed expressed in lives of goodness/godliness.
III. What are sanctified people called? A. Saints. The root word of sanctify & saint are exactly the same. 1. Saints and Christians are the same people! 2. NOT DEAD PEOPLE – not some kind of title – depicting honor for a special person. 3. Southside church in Rapid City has around 40-50 saints that are considered members of this local congregation. B. Observe Acts 26:10 – whose Paul talking about here? Christians – not persons who had been dead for many years! 1. Acts 9:2 – he persecuted people of the way. The way was a term that Luke used on several times to describe FC Christians. 2. There should have been little doubt as to who he was talking about. C. Those who have been sanctified then & now are simply known as Christians & Christians only. 1. Not Baptist Christian – no such thing as a Baptist saint. 2. Not Methodist Christian – no such thing as a Methodist saint. 3. Not Pentecostal Christian – no such thing in scriptures as a Pentecostal saint. 4. Sanctified persons are those who have been added to the Lord’s church – the body of Jesus Christ – not joined a denomination. D. Observe what God’s children were called in NT. Times. 1. Acts 11:26; 1 Pet. 4:16 2. Called Christians – this what we need to be called today and all we need to be called today.
ConclusionA. Have you been sanctified? 1. Are you not a Christian? Then you have not been set apart by God for a holy purpose. 2. Obey the gospel today! Become a Christian! B. Brethren….you have been sanctified by God. Have you sanctified Him in your heart by remaining faithful? Are you living in the way you should? 1. is your life in order? 2. Quit being a Christian in name only. C. I N V I T A T I O N
