Measures of the Holy Spirit1999050 Topic # 0303 Introduction A. This lesson concludes this series on the Holy Spirit. Spent time discussing: 1. Who is the HS? 2. The indwelling of the HS. B. Large # of sincere people believe that miracles are still being performed today. C. Many teach that the baptism of the HS is for God’s children today as it was for the apostles in the FC. D. Unfortunately…the confusion arises from a lack of Biblical understanding. E. That there were different measures of the HS in the FC is a fact. Observe 1 Cor. 12:1-11. F. The Bible teaches us that there are four very different measures of the HS.
I. Jesus Christ received the Spirit w/o measure. A. John 3:30-35 – Jesus had power to do all things. (All things have been given into His hands) 1. Jesus healed the lame/gave sight to the blind/made the dumb to speak/deaf to hear/fed the multitudes/walked on water/calmed the seas/raised the dead. 2. Observe Lk. 7:22-23 3. Even greater than all of this: Jesus rose from the dead. B. Why? Why all of this? 1. Jhn. 20:30-31 – to confirm the word & make believers.
II. The measure of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. A. Only 2 incidents in the NT where this took place. 1. Acts 2:4 – 12 apostles baptized in the HS on day of Pentecost. 2. Jhn. 16:13 – Jesus promised apostles them the comforter – would come to them to lead them into ALL truth – told them some 2 weeks before Pentecost. a) Christ returning to His father…realized that the apostles would still need some guidance – the HS would come to direct them into all truth. 3. After they baptized…they had power to speak in tongues & do miraculous things as well. 4. Apostles already had power a/g unclean spirits, to cast them out, to heal all manner of sickness; all manner of disease. See Mt. 10:1. 5. That power not received on Pentecost. B. 2nd incident not received on Pentecost. Occurred at home of Cornelius. 1. Acts 10, 11. Cornelius/household received the baptism of the HS to show that the Gentiles had been accepted of God as well as the Jews. 2. Acts 10:44-46 – proved this b/c they b/g to speak in tongues. a) notice Peter’s question in 10:47. Said they received the Spirit just as the apostles did. b) Notice also Acts 11:15 3. Peter did not say that Cornelius & his household had received the HS as all other believers had… a) he said they received it as the apostles did….in the beginning…at Pentecost.
III. The Laying on Hands Measure of the Holy Spirit. A. Apostles…few in #. Much work to be done. 1. Apostles…laid their hands on various ones so that they might have the power of the HS. 2. First reading of this: Acts 6:1-7. Notice especially: 6:6. 3. This gave men such as Philip the power to go to Samaria to perform miracles & teach the things of Jesus. B. How do we know that Philip and the rest of the men did not receive the Spirit in the same measure of the apostles? 1. Acts 8:14-17 2. Peter/John summoned from Jerusalem so that they might receive the HS & miraculous power. 3. Only apostles had power to confer the HS.
IV. The Ordinary Measure of the Holy Spirit. A. Except for those who received the baptism of the HS & those who received the laying on hands measure of the HS…all others received what we might call the ordinary measure of the HS. 1. this assured the receiver of the HS – but not miraculous power. 2. Acts 2:38-39 – Peter…all who would obey gospel were promised the HS. Notice…baptism of HS NOT promised. 3. Note…this receiving gift of HS a promise…upon their being immersed in water for the remission of sins. 4. Gift of the HS received when one implants the Word in his heart! B. Baptism of the HS promised ONLY to apostles. 1. administered by God. Given to guide them into all truth – to confirm the word. 2. To direct them into the perfect law of liberty – Js. 1:25. 3. The case of Cornelius was the only exception.
V. The Laying on of Hands Measure of the HS administered by apostles. A. when last apostle died…and those who they had laid their hands on died – miraculous measures of the HS ceased to exist. B. 2 Tim. 3:16-17 – no longer need them – since NT given to us in written form – it designed to lead us into all truth.
VI. What about those today who claimed to have received some bapt of HSA. Do people have right to make this claim? 1. where are TV/Newspaper coverage of these miraculous exhibitions? a) such demonstrations would surely be covered. b) Would be unmistakable. 2. are they one of the apostles on the day of Pentecost? 3. Are they one of those to whom the apostles laid hands on to receive miraculous power? 4. Were they w/Cornelius when the baptism of the HS given to them? B. They have been deceived…misguided…and are imposters. 1. they are out of God’s will…How could He be leading them? 2. Mt. 15:14 – they brag/boast of their powers! C. Prove it!
Conclusion A. What church needs today is men who will stand on truth of gospel & not waiver. B. Rom. 1:16; Phil. 3:17 C. I N V I T A T I O N
