Holy Spirit Baptism

Introduction
Holy Spirit series continues. This is installment 5 of 7. This sermon deals with Holy Spirit baptism. The subject is misrepresented by many in today’s religious world. It is portrayed as some kind of dramatic and extraordinary event. A few religious groups teach that Holy Spirit baptism is necessary for salvation – and that salvation is demonstrated by the ability to speak in tongues. Others use the idea of this baptism as a way out of being immersed in water for the remission of sins. Tonight we will attempt to show what it is, who it was for, and that it (Holy Spirit baptism) has passed away.

I. The Scriptures speak of Holy Spirit Baptism
   A. John the Baptist spoke of it: Mt. 3:7-11; Mk. 1:8; Lk. 3:15-18.
    B. Jesus spoke of it: Acts 1:1-8
        1. Not many days now… has reference to Pentecost – see Lk. 24:46-49.
        2. Acts 1:8 – apostles would receive this power in Jerusalem.

II. The nature of the promise of Holy Spirit Baptism
   A. Observe Jhn. 14-16.
        1. Jhn. 14:16-18 – promised to send HS to the apostles.
      2. Jhn. 14:26 – HS would teach the apostles all things…
        3. Jhn. 15:26 – HS sent to the apostles.
      4. Jhn. 16:7-11 – Helper...comes to you… (the apostles)
        5. Jhn. 16:13-15 – HS will guide you into all truth… (the apostles)
    B. HS baptism a promise made to the apostles only! No one else to receive it!
    C. What about John’s statements in Mt/Mk/Lk?
        1. Also mentioned "a baptism of fire." This refers to condemnation.
        2. Everyone there did not receive a baptism of HS & of fire! Neither did all receive one or the other. Jesus SPECIFIES who would receive baptism of HS.

III. Fulfillment of the Promise:
    A. Lk. 24:49; Acts 1:4 – Disciples tarried in Jerusalem.
    B. Acts 2:4 – the 12 – including Matthias – received the Spirit.
    C. Paul received it as well – although at a later date – Acts 22:14-15; 26:16; 22:16; 9:17
    D. HS baptism from God – not man! Received directly from heaven – NOT by laying of hand

IV. Results of baptism in the Holy Spirit:
   A. Recipients were able to speak in tongues – Acts 2:4. Aid in great commission – Mk. 16
    B. Gave them the gift of inspiration: Mt. 10:20; 2 Cor. 2:10-13
    C. Gave them power to work signs, miracles, wonders – Heb. 2:3-4; Acts 3:1-9; 4:8-10; 28:6

V. What the Baptism of the Holy Spirit Does NOT do:
   A. Does not depend on human agency; nor purifies the heart – Acts 1:5; 15:9; Rom. 12:1-2
    B. Does not sanctify nor save. Jhn. 17:17; Acts 26:18; Rom .10:17; Acts 11:14
    C. Does not convert or give faith. Psa. 19:7; Acts 14:1
    D. Does not purify one’s soul – 1 Pet. 1:22.
    E. Was not common! Acts 11:15-16

VI. Baptism of the Holy Spirit has passed away!
   A. Eph. 4:8-14; 1 Cor. 13:8-13 – that which is perfect has come – Js. 1:22-25!
