Holy Spirit Baptism
1999044 Introduction A. Holy Spirit series continues. Going to finish up the series over the next 3 Sunday nights – including tonight. Previously we have discussed: 1. who is the HS? 2. The indwelling of the HS 3. How the HS dwells through the Word 4. The HS in conversion B. Tonight’s sermon deals w/holy spirit baptism. 1. subject misrepresented by many in the religious world. 2. HS baptism portrayed as dramatic & extraordinary in nature. 3. Some claim that HS baptism necessary for salvation. This has been affirmed in debate & is indicated by speaking in tongues. 4. Some use HS baptism as a way out of being immersed in water for salvation. 5. Among some denominations: this is their central theme. C. As w/any study on Bible subjects…we must limit the study to what the Bible says –w/o going b/y the law of God. On the other hand – we need not fall short of what the Bible teaches. 1. We can understand this subject 2. Eph. 5:17 – do not be unwise – but understand what the will of the Lord is.
I. The Scriptures Speak of HS Baptism. A. Endowment first mentioned: Mt. 3:11 by John the Baptist. 1. not John has just issued a rebuke to the Pharisees/Saducees (3:7) – affirming that they needed to produce fruit suitable to repentance. 2. 3:10 – John states importance of bearing good fruit. B. John is recorded to have spoken on the subject in Mk. 1:8. C. John recorded to have spoken on the subject in Lk. 3:16. Read 15-18 to get full context. 1. again…notice importance of bearing fruit worthy of repentance. 2. The three above passages by John speak of HS baptism being a fact. D. Jesus spoke on the subject as well. Spoke on it b/f His resurrection & ascension. 1. Acts 1:1-8. 2. Reference to HS baptism in 1:4-5. 3. The not many days now has reference to Pentecost. Read Lk’s account in 24:46-49. Jesus promised the apostles power from on high. a) apostles remained in Jerusalem until they were bestowed w/this power. b) notice Acts 1:8.
II. The Nature of the Promise. A. Observe John 14-16. 1. Jhn. 14:16-18 – Jesus promised to send HS to the apostles. 2. Jhn. 14:26 – HS would teach the apostles all things that He said to them. 3. Jhn. 15:26 – who I shall send to you from the Father… 4. Jhn. 16:7-11 – Helper…comes to you…. 5. Jhn. 16:13-15 – HS will guide you into all truth. B. Obvious that above statements show the HS would come to the apostles. His mission would be to supply the needs of the apostles in carrying out the great commission given to them in Mt. 28:19-20. C. Observe: HS baptism was a promise made by Jesus to the apostles. It did not include anyone else. Now one was commanded to receive it. 1. It’s purpose was to help apostles remember things Jesus taught. 2. Was to help them b/c perfectly equipped for their mission. D. What about John’s statements in Mt/MK/Lk? 1. John wasn’t talking to apostles. Do this contradict w/what we have just said about the HS baptism being promised only to the apostles? 2. Remember…John said there was to come a baptism in HS & in fire. a) what is the baptism of fire? Can refer to condemnation. Note the context of Mt/Lk account. b) Not reference to the ax and fan in connection w/the threshing. 3. Therefore…the you in John’s account did not refer to every person receiving the baptism of the HS & the baptism of fire; neither did it mean each would receive one or the other. 4. But….it did mean there would come both. But to which men would it come? a) relative to the baptism of the HS – Jesus specifies the apostles. b) No other persons were promised the baptism of the HS. E. Acts 1:4-5 – not when Jesus made promise to apostles. He makes direct reference to John’s baptizing w/water & the Spirit. The promise of this was to them – the apostles. 1. the baptism of the HS promised to no one else. Therefore: 2. no one else should expect to receive it. 3. He should not expect to find the Bible’s stating that others received it.
III. The fulfillment of the Promise. A. Lk. 24:49; Acts 1:4 – disciples tarried in Jerusalem – per the command of Jesus. B. Acts 2:4 – the 12 – including Matthias – received the Spirit. 1. Acts 11:15 – Jesus refers to the occasion as the beginning. 2. This baptism marked the apostles apart from all men. C. What about Paul? Did he receive this? 1. Yes. He b/c an apostle. Was not inferior to the other apostles in anyway. This even though he was placed into apostleship at a later date. 2. Conversion detailed in Acts 9, 22, 26. All 3 accounts together show many important details. a) Acts 22:14-15; 26:16 – Jesus appeared to Paul. He b/c a firsthand witness of Jesus. This qualified Him to be an apostle. b) Acts 22:16 – Baptized in water for the remission of sins in accordance w/God’s plan of salvation. c) Acts 9:17 – was to be filled w/the HS according to Ananias. D. Observe: 1. HS baptism from God – not from man. 2. HS baptism received directly from heaven – NOT by laying on of hands. 3. Paul’s baptism came following his conversion – His being baptized in water to be added to the body of Christ.
IV. Results of Baptism in the Holy Spirit. A. Recipients were enabled to speak in tongues. Acts 2:4. 1. this would assist them greatly in fulfilling great commission in Mk. 16:16; Mt. 28:18-20. 2. Evidence of this seen clearly in Acts 2. B. Gave them gift of inspiration. 1. see following passages: Mt. 10:20; Lk. 24:49; 2 Cor. 2:10-13. 2. Their teaching was from God. Sole purpose: to teach God’s plan of salvation & to furnish proof that this was not just their opinion. Their teaching was the truth from God! C. Gave them power to work signs, miracles, wonders. 1. This done for evidence that they were God sent. 2. Heb. 2:3-4 3. That they were able to perform miracles expressed in Acts 3:1-9; 4:8-10; 16:16-25; 28:6.
V. What Baptism of the HS does not do A. HS baptism does not depend upon human agency. 1. it was administered by the Lord. 2. The apostles did not know as to when they were to receive it. See acts 1:5. B. HS baptism does not purify the heart. 1. Acts 15:9 – one’s heart is purified by faith. 2. Rom. 12:1-2 – by the renewing of His mind. C. HS baptism does not sanctify. 1. Jhn. 17:17 – sanctified by truth. What is truth? The word of God! 2. Acts 26:18 – sanctified through our faith – which is produced by the hearing of the Word – Rom. 10:17. D. HS baptism does not save. 1. What about Cornelius? 2. Yes…he received a miraculous endowment of the HS. 3. Done to show Jews that Gentiles were going to be eligible for salvation under Christ. 4. Wasn’t saved b/f this happened….Acts 11:14 – Peter was to speak words by which He could be saved. E. HS baptism does not convert. 1. Ps. 19:7 – The law of the Lord is perfect…restoring/converting the soul. 2. One converts by applying his life to the law of God. F. HS baptism does not give faith. 1. Acts 14:1 – what produced the faith of the people at Iconium? 2. That same thing will happen today when the truth is preached/taught in it’s simplicity. G. HS baptism does not purify one’s soul. 1. 1 Pet. 1:22 – purify soul through obedience to the gospel. 2. Obedience to gospel involves faith, repentance, confession, baptism in water. H. HS baptism was not common. 1. Acts 11:15-16 – Notice how Peter rehearses the case of Cornelius before the church at Jerusalem. 2. Notice his words…at the beginning shows that from that date till the incident at the house of Cornelius there had been nothing like it. 3. What about the Samaritans in Acts 8:14-17? Here the Spirit given to them by the imposition of the hands of the apostles. Different from the accounts in Acts 2 & 10.
VI. Baptism of the HS has passed away. A. Eph. 4:8-14 – miraculous spiritual gifts – to continue for a limited amount of time. B. The fullness of the knowledge of Christ is revealed to us in the gospel. 1. spiritual gifts were to continue until the gospel was fully revealed – till the canon of the Scriptures were completed. 2. W/the sacred writing being completed…there no need to inspiration, nor for miracles to confirm the word. C. 1 Cor. 13:8-13 1. to us has been revealed man’s origin, sin, and destiny. This has been supplied w/a knowledge of how he may escape sin & receive a heavenly reward. 2. That which is perfect…the word of God – Js. 1:22-25. 3. Miraculous gifts of the Spirit have served their purpose & have passed away. 4. To contend for miraculous powers of the Spirit now is to deny that the Bible is a complete revelation from God; or else one does not understand the purpose of miracles in the bible.
Conclusion A. HS baptism does not occur in 1999! It hasn’t occurred since the 1st century. B. Don’t believe the religious science fiction of the day. C. Have you been baptized in water for the remission of your sins? You still need to do that in 1999 to be saved. D. I N V I T A T I O N |
