Veils on Our Hearts

Introduction.

Our first text is based out of Exodus 34:29-35. Paul used this event years later as he wrote to the first century church at Corinth to demonstrate the condition of the Jew’s heart toward putting away the Old Law. See 2 Cor. 3:12-18. The Jews had blinded themselves to the truth and were "storing up wrath" in the day to come. Men today can blind themselves to the truth if they are not careful. In our lesson tonight, we plan on discussing four ways men can place veils on their heart. Make sure your heart is not veiled from the truth! How can men place a veil on their heart?

I. Through Prejudice.
   A. Not always talking about racial prejudice. This not the only form of prejudice!
    B. Jhn. 9:39 – Jesus brought "light" into world so men can escape darkness.
        1. 2 Cor. 3 – Jews prejudiced against ANYONE who not Jewish.
        2. Prejudiced against anyone who had not the law.
    C. We too must strive to do away w/the veil of prejudice.
        1. Lk. 7; 18 – Note the Pharisees.
        2. Can be prejudice against someone’s social status, monetary resources.
        3. Js. 2:1-7.

II. Through Human Reason.
   A. God expects us to use reason wisely & properly.
        1. Faith on a higher plain than reason: Jhn. 20:30-31; Heb. 11:1, 6
        2. Those who believe obligated to serve – Jhn. 13:13-15.
    B. Note Paul’s exhortation in Rom. 16:25-27.

III. Through Self Indulgence.
   A. Jhn. 3:19-21; 2 Cor. 1:13 – unbelief results from more than intellectual prob.
        1. Many wish to satisfy human desires rather than serve God.
        2. Phil. 3:19
    B. Numerous examples of self indulgence in Bible
        1. Eli’s sons – 1 Sam. 2:12-17
` 2. Rich fool – Lk. 12:16-21

IV. Through Bitterness.
   A. Bitterness can take root in a variety of human relationships:
        1. World against Christians: Rom. 3:14; Psa. 64:3-4
        2. In the marriage relationship: Col. 3:19
        3. Among brethren – Js. 3:14-15
    B. Eph. 4:31 – we must follow this exhortation.
    C. Bitterness can DESTROY families, relationships, and congregations!

V. Conclusion.
   A. 2 Cor. 3:16-18 – All veils can be removed through Jesus!
    B. Must bear His image: Phil. 3:20-21; 1 Jhn. 3:2
