The Christians
Obligations to His Family
Introduction:
We continue with our series on different obligations of Christians. We
are all familiar with obligations. Godly families are becoming far and
few between here in America these days. We as children of God need to
strive to have Godly families. Each member of the family has a responsibility
to contribute in a positive way to the family relationship. If one fails
in this area, he will not be pleasing to God. Make sure you are
following through on your obligations to your family. How are we
obligated?
I. The Christian must be sold on
Christianity.
A. Christianity must be a part of who we are.
1. Rom. 14:7 - others around
us MUST be able to see Christ in our lives.
2. Parents: are you a
positive influence on your children?
3. Jhn. 13:15; 1 Pet. 2:21-22
- must follow in Christ's example.
B. You are setting some kind of example in your
home. Positive? Negative?
C. The Christian is to remain steadfast in the
Lord. See Acts 2:42; 1 Cor. 15:58
II. The Christ must promote godly
influences in his family.
A. What kind of friends do we associate with?
1. 1 Cor. 15:33 - those around
us influence us for good or bad.
2. We then can influence those
in our family for good or bad.
B. Two who let the influence of those around them turn
them away from God:
1. Solomon - 1 Kings 11:1-8 -
built altars to idols - due to influence of foreign wives.
2. Peter - Mt. 26:69-75 - denied
Christ 3 times - due to influence of those around him.
C. Must guard with whom
we associate - Prov. 28:7; 2 Cor. 6:14
D. Have responsibility to guard external influences on
family are good/wholesome.
1. TV, internet, books,
movies, all can contain ungodly things.
2. Can influence thoughts for
bad.
3. Thoughts important - see
Prov. 23:7; Lk. 6:45; Heb. 4:12
III. The Christian must OPPOSE
worldliness.
A. Christianity must be exhibited on a daily basis
in our lives.
1. Mt. 6:24 - Can't be neutral
to sin and be a Christian.
2. Mt. 12:30 - must make a
decision.
B. Worldliness has habit of creeping in
families. What are we doing to get it out? 1 Jhn. 2:15
C. Can't oppose something by condoning it. Must
speak & work against worldliness.
IV. The Christian must fulfill
his duties to the family relationship.
A. Men obligated as husband and father. Eph.
5:23, 25; 6:4
B. Women obligated as wife and mother. Eph.
5:22-23; Prov. 22:6
C. Children obligated to parents and to be example for
siblings. Eph. 6:1-3
All family members need to strive to
meet their obligations to each other.
One of the greatest jobs we have is to
influence & teach our families to embrace the doctrine of Christ.
It's a full time job. Are you
ready?
