The Lord's Supper Part Two
(What is it and How Should we Partake?)
Introduction:
We continue our discussion concerning the Lord's Supper. Partaking of the
Lord's Supper is one of the most important things we do as Christians. We
need to make sure that we are prepared to partake of it in a manner that is
well pleasing to God. This evening's lesson will attempt to answer five
basic questions. For example:
I. How is the Lord's Supper
designated in the New Testament?
A. 1 Cor. 11:20 - The Lord's
Supper.
B. 1 Cor. 10:21 - The Lord's Table.
C. 1 Cor. 10:16 - Communion. Refers to a “sharing” of
the body/blood of Christ.
D. Acts 2:42; 20:7; 1 Cor. 10:16 - the breaking of bread.
II. What are some unscriptural
names & beliefs associated with the Lord's Supper?
A. Eucharist.
1. Term mixes up the cause & effect of the Lord's Supper.
2. Term originates from Greek word in Mt. 26:27. Used extensively
in 2nd cent.
B. Sacrament.
1. Used in centuries following apostolic age. Adopted by Catholic
church.
2. Sacrament has been applied to a variety of practices by Catholics.
C. Mass.
1. Catholics teach Christ sacrificed during every mass.
2. Heb. 9:26-28 - Christ offered up once & for all for man!
D. Trans-substantiation - a literal changing of the bread & fruit of
the vine.
E. Con-substantiation - a mystical changing of the bread & fruit of
the vine.
III. What is the purpose and the
significance of the Lord's Supper?
A. 1 Cor. 11:23-26 - Lord's Supper to be a memorial.
B. 11:26 - a proclamation of the death of Christ.
C. 11:26 - a statement of belief that Christ will return some day.
D. 1 Cor. 10:16 - a communion with one another & the Lord.
E. Jhn. 6:53-55 - a source of spiritual nourishment.
IV. How are we to partake of the
Lord's Supper?
A. Lk. 22:18, 29-30; Mt. 26:29 - to be observed in the kingdom of
God.
1. Only those in the kingdom are allowed to partake.
B. Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 11:17-34 - to be observed in the worship of the
church.
C. Acts 20:7 - to be observed on Sunday, each Sunday.
D. Mt. 26:26-29 - to partake using the proper elements.
1. Unleavened bread & fruit of the vine. Man has no right to
change these!
V. What should be the motives
behind our partaking of the Lord's Supper?
A. 1 Cor. 11:28 - a time of self examination. How do we do
this?
B. 1 Cor. 11:27-30 - must partake in a worthy manner. How do we do
this?
These are fundamental elements surrounding the Lord's Supper
