The Lord's Supper Part One
(A Fulfillment of the Old Testament Passover)
Introduction:
The Lord's Supper has been and will continue to be one of the most abused parts
of worship unto Almighty God. Sadly, many principles behind it are
misunderstood. Other principles are never mentioned or considered.
Some denominations freely change the elements of supper, while others only
offer it twice or three times a year. In Acts 20:6-7 we have some facts
on how the first century church felt about the Lord's Supper. In this
lesson, we wish to explore the history and the relation of the Lord's Supper to
the Old Testament Passover.
I. History of the Passover.
A. The Lord's Supper an outgrowth
or fulfillment of the Passover.
1. Lord's Supper established at the conclusion of the Passover feast.
2. 1 Cor. 5:7 - Christ is our Passover - sacrificed for us.
B. Passover a remembrance of the deliverance of Israel from Egypt.
1. Ex. 12:1-13 - the Passover instituted for Israelites.
2. Ex. 12:14-20 - a memorial for them throughout their generations.
II. Events at the last Passover.
A. Lk. 22:1-20 - Passover feast prepared by Peter & John.
1. v. 7-8 Peter, John probably sent from Bethany where they spent the
night.
2. Lamb to be slain at temple & it's blood sprinkled on altar.
3. 22:9-13 - location where they would eat was determined.
B. Incidents at the Last Supper…
1. Mt. 26:21-25 - Jesus announces His betrayal.
2. Mt. 26:26-29; Mk. 14:22-25; Lk. 22:19-23; 1 Cor. 11:23-30 - LS
instituted.
C. Lord's Supper fulfilled Passover feast by:
1. Coming in the kingdom of Christ. Lk. 22:15-16; Rev. 3:20; Acts 2:42
2. Being something NEW. Lk. 22:17-20
III. How are the Lord's Supper
and the Passover Similar?
A. Passover feast required a lamb w/o blemish.
1. Ex. 12:5 - a mail within it's first year.
2. To demonstrate the sacredness of the Passover.
3. 1 Pet. 1:17-21 - Christ offered on cross as a lamb w/o blemish!
4. Ex. 12:46; Num. 9:12 - not to have bones broken.
5. Psa. 34:20; Jhn. 19:34-36 - none of the bones of Christ broken.
B. Passover feast demonstrated faith on the part of the Israelites.
1. Ex. 12:21-23 - Israel did this trusting that their firstborn would not
be killed.
2. 1 Cor. 11:26 - Christians partake of the LS demonstrating their faith.
C. Passover to be carried out throughout all generations of Israelites.
1. Ex. 12:14, 47 - sustained yearly as a memorial.
2. Acts 2:42; 1 Cor. 11:25-26 - memorial to be a regular thing.
D. Passover looked back to deliverance & forward to a coming.
1. Back to Passover & forward to the coming of the Savior.
2. 1 Cor. 11:26 - LS looks back to cross and forward to the return of
Christ.
The Lord's Supper is a commemoration of the life of Christ!
