The Lord's Supper - Part One

I.  Introduction:

A.     Begins a 3 part series on the importance of the Lord's Supper.  Hope you enjoy the series and learn much from it.

1.      Lord's Supper has been/continue to be one of the most abused parts of worship unto Almighty God.

2.      Many principles behind it are misunderstood or they are never mentioned/considered.

B.     Example:

1.      Mormons substitute water for the fruit of the vine.

2.      Catholics eat the bread by to do not drink the cup, leaving it for the priest.

3.      Protestant denominations - Episcopal, Methodists, Presbyterian, Baptist offer LS quarterly, annually, or during manmade holidays other than Sunday - i.e., Xmas, Good Friday, Memorial Day, etc.

C.     Acts 20:6-7 presents facts on how the FC church felt about the LS.

1.      disciples assembled to partake of the LS.  It was why they came together.

2.      LS to be taken upon the first day of the week.

a.      came together to remember the most important sacrifice ever made for man.

b.      Text: partook of simple emblems of Christ's death & remembered Him every week.

c.      Faithful followers of Christ do the same today.

D.     3 part series will examine:

1.      This AM - LS is a fulfillment of the Passover feast from the OT.

2.      This PM - What is it & how are we to partake?

3.      Next Sunday AM - Abusing the Lord's Supper.

II.  History of the Passover.

A.     According to the 3 gospel accounts, the LS established at the close of the Passover feast.

1.      This was last Passover feast under the Law of Moses.

2.      Passover feast foreshadowed the LS. LS an outgrowth or fulfillment of the Passover.

a.      1 Cor. 5:7 - Christ is our Passover - sacrificed for us.

b.      Let's take a moment & look at the OT Passover feast.

B.     Passover feast commemorated the deliverance of Israelites from the death angel as he passed over Egypt to destroy the first born.

1.      Egypt held Israel captive as slaves for 430 years.  Refused to release Israel.

a.      God sent 10 plagues - beginning w/water turning to blood…

b.      death of firstborn was the 10th plague.  The last straw - the one that made Pharaoh decide to let them go.

2.      Ex. 12:1-13 - institution of the Passover for the Israelites.

a.      carry this throughout their generations.

b.      12:14-20 - to be a memorial ( a reminder of what the Lord did for them in delivering them from Egypt.)

3.      Passover feast celebrated every year after.

a.      great throngs of people attended feast every year.  Most solemn of Jewish feasts.

b.      Jews living in Jerusalem made great preparation to entertain visiting brethren from all of Israel.

 

III.  Events at the Last Passover.

A.     Lk. 22:1-20 - the Passover feast prepared.

1.      Lk. 19:28 - about week b/f His death - Christ enters capital city of Jerusalem.

a.      19:45-48 - cleanses the temple again.

b.      21:5-6 - predicts the destruction of temple.

c.      21:34-36 - encourages disciples to watch/be ready @ all times.

d.      21:37-38 - teaching in temple by day; staying in Bethany by night.

2.      22:7-8 - Peter & John sent to prepare Passover meal.  Probably sent from Bethany where they spent the night.

a.      Passover eaten inside city of Jerusalem.

b.      Lamb taken to tabernacle where it was slain & it's blood sprinkled on altar.

c.      Lamb then to be roasted whole over fire & eaten.  Not any of it to be left - or what was to be burned.

3.      22:9-13 - location where they would eat determined.

a.      Jesus probably arranged this place beforehand.

b.      Man carrying pitcher of water - unusual - women did this typically.

c.      Jesus remains in Bethany.  Imagine thoughts going through His mind.

d.      Mt. 26:19; Mk. 14:16; Lk. 22:13 - Peter/John prepare the Passover.

1.      roast lamb.

2.      Prepare unleavened bread; bitter herbs; & procure wine.

B.     Incidents at the Last Supper…

1.      Lk. 22:14 - Christ, apostles sit down.

a.      didn't sit at tables like we do, but reclined on low couches or mats.

b.      Their faces brought near table.

2.      Mt. 26:21-25 - Jesus announces His betrayal.

a.             peaceful, solemn assembly met w/startling announcement.

b.             Filled w/obvious sorrow.  They had no reason to doubt Him.

1.      No idea how His betrayal would take place.

2.      Brought anxiety to all but Judas.

c.              Mt. 26:23-25 - it is he who dipped his hand with Me in the dish.

1.      dish contained sweet sauce which was prepared for them to dip the bitter herbs.

2.      Notice in the text Christ doesn't specifically point out Judas as His betrayer.

C.    The Lord's Supper instituted at close of Passover meal.

1.      Mt. 26:26-29

2.      Mk. 14:22-25

3.      Lk.  22:19-23

4.      1 Cor. 11:23-30 - Paul restates this to the Corinthian Brethren who had been abusing the LS.

D.    How was the LS going to be a fulfillment of the Passover feast?

1.      Lk. 22:15-16 - would be fulfilled in the coming kingdom of Christ.

a.      kingdom not yet in existence.  Wouldn't come until the death of Christ.

b.      It now is fulfilled in the LS when we - His disciples - partake of it each week.

1.      Rev. 3:20 - we have spiritual communion w/Him.

2.      Acts 2:42 - apostles celebrated LS each Lord's Day.

c.      back to Luke - imagine emotions going through mind of Christ.  Read v. 15-16.

1.      w/in 24 hours - beaten, spat upon, crucified.

2.      Conclusion of (final hour or two) being w/men who he had just spent the last 3 years.

2.  Lk. 22:17-20 - LS to be something NEW.  A sign of the new covenant.

a.      by next day the OT law would have been done away with.  NT going into effect.

b.      LS was/is to serve as a memorial to the life of Jesus Christ.

1.      time of remembrance of the life of Christ.

2.      His suffering, be it mental & physical.

3.      Remembrance of His great love for mankind.

4.      Lk. 22:19 - do this in remembrance of me…

a.      not only remember his death, but birth, life, teaching,…

b.      obedience & good deeds.

 

IV.  How are the Passover & the Lord's Supper Similar?

A.     Passover feast required a lamb w/o blemish.

1.      Ex. 12:5 - to be a male w/in it's first year.

2.      This involved sacrifice; as this (w/o blemish) would be one of the better in the flock.

a.        lamb to be un-injured, w/o bodily fault - like all other sacrifices.

b.        This was to demonstrate the sacredness of the Passover.

3.      Jesus Christ offered upon the cross as a lamb w/o blemish!

a.      1 Pet. 1:17-21 - Christ offered in our place!

b.      Christ w/o blemish in that:

1.      w/o sin - 1 Pet. 2:22; Heb. 4:14-16

2.      was perfect example for each one of us.

3.      Death demonstrated the great love care concern of God for mankind.

4.  Passover lamb of OT not to have bones broken.

a.       Ex. 12:8-10, 46; Num. 9:12 - to be cooked whole w/o broken bones.

b.       Psa. 34:20; Jhn. 19:34-36 - none of the bones of Christ were broken in His crucifixion.

B.     Passover feast demonstrated faith on part of Israelites.

1.      Ex. 12:21-23 - Israelites did this trusting that their first born not be killed.

a.      was a memorial to this event & of their belief in God.

b.      Looked strange to nations around them.  But this what God wanted.  They did it.

2.      When Christians partake of LS, they demonstrate their faith.

a.      powerful means of preaching to the world.

b.      In it's observance, we proclaim the fact of Christ's death.

c.      In it's observance, we look forward to His coming again.

d.      in doing so ,we proclaim the certainty of that event!

3.      1 Cor. 11:26 - notice words of Paul.

C.    The Passover to be carried out though every generation of Israelites there afterward.

1.      Ex. 12:14, 47 - sustained yearly as a remembrance of what the Lord did for them.

2.      LS to be kept by Christians until Christ returns.  Example set in NT.

a.      Acts 2:42

b.      1 Cor. 11:25-26 - a memorial, reminder for us.  To be a regular thing, notice the word often.

D.    Passover looked back to a deliverance and forward to a coming.

1.          once/year they looked back to event of Passover - their deliverance from Egypt.

2.          looked forward to the coming of a Savior - one who would save them from sin - Jesus Christ - the Son of God.  Jhn. 1:29

3.          Likewise, the LS looks back to the cross as a point of deliverance.

a.       mankind now has opportunity to be delivered b/c of the events of the cross.

1.      Titus 1:11-13

2.      Eph. 2:1-7, 13

b.       those who respond in obedience to Him can be delivered from sin.

4.  The LS looks forward to the return of Christ.

a.      1 Cor .11:26 - those who partake proclaim the FACT of His 2nd coming.

b.      Acts 1:11 - words of these men are FACT.

 

V.  Conclusion.

A.     In this AM's lesson we have learned some facts concerning the Lord's Supper.

1.      We have focused upon it's relation to the Passover feast.

2.      We have seen the emotions that perhaps Christ felt in His final hours on earth w/His apostles.

3.      We've seen the tremendous sacrifice He made for you & me.

B.     The LS is a commemoration of the life of Christ.

1.      only those who are in His kingdom (Christians) have opportunity to partake & dine w/Him.

2.      Are you a Christian?  If not, why not?

3.      Become one today!
